Earthquaker Devices are arguably the most well known boutique effects pedal maker in the world, with a selection of pedals that is hugely diverse and encompasses both functionality and insanity in equal measure. All of their pedals are lovingly handmade in Akron, Ohio.
The Earthquaker Devices Bows is a Germanium preamp that despite the simplicity of its appearance is a genuine tonal swiss army knife capable of serving any number of purposes on your pedalboard. Based around a vintage NOS OC139 black glass transistor, the Bows has a true vintage Germanium sound that is very versatile. There is a toggle control with two tone settings; 'Treble' and 'Full'. With 'Treble' engaged the output is brighter as you would expect, but also adds some nice harmonics to your tone and is the perfect thing to push a tube amp to breakup for a great lead tone. With 'Full' engaged, the Bows has a much greater bass response with a warmer overall output. With both settings, the 'Level' control gets progressively grittier as its increased, with some great crunchy drive tones achievable with subtle movements of the knob. The Bows is also the perfect partner for your overdrive pedal of choice, capable of adding extra grit and rich harmonics when stacked with other gain pedals.
The perfect mixture of simplicity and functionality, the Earthquaker Devices Bows is deserving of a place on any players pedalboard.
- Level - Adjusts the output level by setting the bias voltage of the transistor. A small amount of noise while dialing this in is perfectly normal.
- Tone Toggle - “Treble” for a brighter, more resonant tone and “Full” for a warmer, bass-heavy push.
- Powered by any standard 9V DC centre negative power supply.
